July 2021 core update

The completion of a five-week change

Google had said in June that some intended changes were not ready and would arrive in July. This was that release. Taken together with June, the full core update spanned 2 June to 12 July 2021, which is 41 days from first movement to final state.

Google also noted that sites which had seen changes in June might see further movement here, and that some of that movement could go the other way. In practice a site could drop in June, recover partly in July, and end the sequence roughly where it started.

What that does to a recovery timeline

It extends the point at which measurement becomes meaningful. The usual guidance is to wait for the rollout to complete before judging anything, and here completion meant waiting through a second announced update five weeks later.

• The stable measurement window began 13 July 2021. Anything before that is interim.
• Work shipped during June was assessed by the July half. One of the rare cases where acting mid-sequence could actually be picked up.
• A site that ended July level with June is not unaffected. It may have been demoted and partly restored, which is different from never having moved.

If your decline dates to this period

Establish whether there was one break point or two. A single step in early June with no July movement is a clean core demotion. Two steps, or a step and a partial reversal, means the split rollout affected you and the final position is what matters.
