Which update hit your site?
Each Google system needs a different fix. Diagnosing the wrong one wastes months. Pick the update type and see the exact recovery process I use.
Core update recovery
Site-wide quality reassessment. I benchmark against SERP winners, rebuild topical depth and strengthen brand signals.
See recovery process →HHelpful content recovery
Site-level classifier demotion. Content pruning, E-E-A-T proof, author authority and first-hand experience signals.
See recovery process →SSpam update and manual action
SpamBrain and manual penalties. Policy violation cleanup, reconsideration requests and thin content removal.
See recovery process →LLink penalty and disavow
Toxic backlink audit, outreach removal, disavow file and negative SEO protection.
See recovery process →AIAI Overview traffic loss
Rankings held but clicks vanished. I separate AI Overview CTR displacement from real algorithmic drops before you change anything.
See recovery process →FFuture-proofing and monitoring

FAQ
Common questions
Short answers. Detailed guides are in the blog.
How do I know if a Google update hit my site?
Compare the exact date your Search Console clicks dropped with the update timeline above. If the drop starts within the rollout window of a confirmed update and affects many pages at once, it is very likely algorithmic. Manual actions show up as a message in Search Console.
What is the difference between an algorithmic drop and a manual action?
A manual action is a human reviewer flagging a policy violation, and it can be removed with a reconsideration request. An algorithmic drop has no notice and no request form. Recovery means fixing the underlying quality, content or link issue and waiting for Google to reassess, usually at the next core update.
How long does recovery take?
Fixes are implemented in two to six weeks. Visible recovery depends on the update type. Spam and link issues can improve within weeks. Core and helpful content demotions are usually reassessed at the next core update, so two to four months is realistic. I never promise a specific date.
What does the free preliminary diagnosis include?
You share Search Console access or an export. Within 48 hours you get the likely cause, the update it correlates with, and whether a full recovery engagement makes sense. No obligation.
