November 2021 core update

The demotion that came with an eight-month wait

Core ranking systems re-score during core updates rather than continuously. A site demoted on 17 November 2021 could fix every problem by January and still sit at its demoted position until late May, because nothing existed in between to re-evaluate it.

Owners routinely read that silence as their work having failed and started over, sometimes several times. Rebuilding twice during a wait is worse than waiting, because it removes any ability to attribute the eventual result to anything.

November 2021 was crowded, then empty

Update	Dates	Measurement (note)
November 2021 spam update	3 to 11 Nov 2021	Completed before core began
November 2021 core update	17 to 30 Nov 2021	13 days
November 2021 local search update	30 Nov to 8 Dec 2021	Began as core ended
Next core update	25 May 2022	258 days later

Three confirmed rollouts inside five weeks, then nothing core for most of a year. That shape, a cluster followed by a long silence, has repeated several times since and it is the main reason average gap figures mislead.

Separating the three

• Before 11 November: the spam update, and only if something on the site engages a published spam policy.
• 17 to 30 November: the core update, which reassesses quality across the whole site.
• From 30 November, for a local business: the Vicinity update, which changed map pack proximity weighting and is a different system entirely.
