Three weeks before everything changed

This update completed on 2 August 2022. The first helpful content update began on 25 August. For review sites that is the most important sequence in the whole series, because the two systems judged different things.

The reviews system asked whether a given review demonstrated first-hand use. The helpful content system asked whether the site as a whole existed to help people or to rank. A site could pass the first and fail the second, and many affiliate sites did exactly that in the autumn of 2022.

Why a six-day rollout still hurt

Rollout length has no relationship to impact, and this is a clean demonstration. Six days produced real movement for affected sites, while the 29-day November 2023 reviews update was reported as comparatively mild.

What a short rollout does change is your ability to react. By the time most owners noticed the decline, the update had finished and the cause was already historical.

Diagnosing a decline that began in this window

• If the drop was limited to review pages, this update is the likely cause and the standard is first-hand evidence.
• If the decline continued into September, the helpful content update compounded it and the fix is site composition rather than individual reviews.
• If non-review pages fell too, you are looking at the helpful content system, not this.

The two need different work, and doing the review-level work on a site with a composition problem is the most common wasted effort I see from this period.
