The August 2024 core update ran from 15 August to 3 September 2024, taking 19 days. It is the only core update Google has framed publicly as an attempt to undo earlier damage. Google said it was designed to surface more content from small and independent sites, and that it took account of feedback from creators affected by the September 2023 helpful content update. For many publishers this was the first real reassessment window in eleven months.
What Google said it was trying to do
Two stated goals, both unusual for a core update announcement. The first was to better surface genuinely useful content, particularly from smaller and independent publishers. The second was explicit acknowledgement of the previous year: Google said it had listened to creators who lost visibility after September 2023 and had used that feedback in developing this update.
That framing set expectations high, and the results were mixed in a way worth understanding rather than resenting.
Who recovered and who did not
- Sites that rebuilt their composition recovered. Publishers who had consolidated thin archives, added real authorship and changed what they published saw substantial returns during this rollout.
- Sites that waited did not. A site unchanged since September 2023 was reassessed against the same standard and reached the same verdict. Waiting was never a strategy, and this update proved it.
- Some sites that changed still did not recover. This is the honest part. Where the business model itself was what Google demoted, no amount of editorial improvement closed the gap.
The lesson that still applies
This update is the clearest evidence available for something clients often refuse to believe: Google reassesses the site as it currently exists, not as it existed when it was demoted. A recovery window only helps if there is something new to assess.
It also showed that recovery windows are unpredictable in timing. Eleven months passed between the demotion and the first meaningful reassessment. Planning a recovery around an expected date is planning around a guess, which is why the timeline planner separates the work you control from the reassessment you do not.
