Short answer
Google completed the worldwide rollout of the Generative AI report on 31 August 2026, so the tab should now exist on every property. If you cannot see it, check where you are looking and which property you opened. If you can see it but it shows nothing, that is a different problem: your pages are not being selected.
These two problems get treated as one and they are not.
- No tab at all is almost always about where you are looking. Fixable in two minutes.
- Tab present, chart empty is about your site. That is the rest of this page.
If the tab is genuinely missing
Work through these before assuming anything is wrong with your site.
- Open Performance first. The Generative AI entry sits inside Performance, alongside Search results. It is not a top-level menu item.
- Check which property you opened. Domain and URL-prefix properties are separate, and it is common to see the report on one and not the other in the same account.
- Check your permission level. Restricted users see less than owners and full users.
- Check the property is verified and not a newly added one still settling.
- Hard refresh or try another browser. Cached interface states are more common than people expect.
One more thing worth knowing. Data collection began around mid-May 2026 and there is no historical backfill. A property verified after that date has nothing before it existed.
The tab is there and the chart is empty
This is the real question, and it is a useful diagnostic rather than a fault.
AI features select from pages Google already ranks and trusts. An empty report means you are not being selected, and the reasons are the same ones that hold you back everywhere else.
The ten reasons, in order of how often they apply
| Reason | Why it produces zero | Fix window |
|---|---|---|
| 1. The site is new | Unproven domains rank for little, so there is nothing to select | 9 to 18 months |
| 2. Almost no organic traffic | No rankings means no AI eligibility | Months |
| 3. Thin or generic content | Nothing specific enough to quote | 2 to 6 weeks per page |
| 4. No organised structure | Hard to parse, hard to extract | Weeks |
| 5. No pillar content | No page is the obvious authority on anything | Months |
| 6. Technical faults | Unindexed pages cannot appear | 1 to 4 weeks |
| 7. Demoted by an algorithm update | AI impressions follow rankings down | Next core update |
| 8. Your queries do not trigger AI | Not every search shows an AI answer | Not a fault |
| 9. Low authority | Citation favours sources with standing | Months |
| 10. Weak brand and reputation | Unknown entities are riskier to cite | Long term |
Row eight is the one to check before spending anything. If your topic is transactional or navigational, AI features may simply not appear for it, and zero impressions is the correct result rather than a problem.
Check these three first
Because they are fast and two of them are binary.
- Are your pages indexed? Check the Pages report. An unindexed page earns zero AI impressions by definition. Reading the exclusion reasons is covered in Google deindexed my pages.
- Did you opt out? Settings, then Search generative AI. If it says Exclude, zero is expected. The decision is covered in should you opt out of Google’s AI features.
- Do you have organic traffic at all? If Search results is also near zero, AI is not your problem. The whole site is.
What actually earns a first impression
Not more pages. That is the instinct and it usually makes things worse.
- Answer one question properly. First sentence under a question heading, then the explanation.
- Include something only you have. Your own data, testing, prices or photographs. Assembled content has nothing quotable in it.
- Keep it current and accurate. A wrong figure is a liability to cite, however well written.
- Target questions, not head terms. AI features appear most on complex and emerging queries.
- Fix the technical basics. Indexable, crawlable, content in the HTML rather than behind a script.
The fuller version of this, including using your own best pages as the model, is in generative AI impressions dropped in Search Console.
This is not worth worrying about if
- Your organic traffic and revenue are healthy. AI impressions are not a business metric on their own.
- Your site is under a year old. Zero is the expected result, not a signal.
- Your queries are transactional. AI answers appear far less on buying intent.
- You have a few weeks of data. The surface is months old for everyone.
An empty report is rarely the problem itself. It is usually a symptom of the same thing your rankings are already telling you.
Empty because you are new, or because something is wrong?
A young site with zero AI impressions is normal. An established site with zero usually has an indexing or demotion problem underneath it. Send your Search Console access and within 48 hours I will tell you which.
