The December 2022 helpful content update ran from 5 December 2022 to 12 January 2023, taking 38 days. It was the second helpful content update and the first to go global across all languages, where the August version had been English-only. Its 38-day rollout is one of the longest on record, and it ran straight through the retail peak and into the new year.

The change from English-only to global

The August 2022 release applied to English-language searches only. This one extended the classifier worldwide. For a non-English site, December 2022 is the first date on which the helpful content system could have affected it at all, which makes this the correct starting point for diagnosing many international sites.

Google also stated the classifier had been improved rather than simply extended, so English sites were reassessed against a stronger version at the same time.

A 38-day rollout across the holidays

Rolling from early December into mid-January creates a specific diagnostic problem. Retail and travel traffic swings hard in that window for reasons that have nothing to do with rankings, and a site can show a December decline that is entirely seasonal, entirely algorithmic, or both.

  • Compare against the same weeks in the previous year, not against November. Year-on-year removes the seasonal shape.
  • Check whether traffic returned in February. Seasonal declines recover; a classifier demotion does not.
  • Check position alongside clicks. Seasonality moves clicks while average position holds. A demotion moves both.

What ran alongside it

The December 2022 link spam update began on 14 December and ran to 12 January, ending the same day. Two updates overlapping for a month, targeting completely different things. If your drop involved a large or purchased backlink profile, that one deserves consideration ahead of this.

The experience component was also added to the E-E-A-T framework in December 2022, turning E-A-T into E-E-A-T. That was a change to the rater guidelines rather than a ranking update, but it signalled the direction: demonstrable first-hand experience became an explicit quality signal.
