The December 2024 core update ran from 12 to 18 December 2024, taking 6 days. It began seven days after the November core update finished, the shortest gap between two core updates Google has ever shipped, and at six days it was also one of the fastest rollouts. Both facts matter for diagnosis rather than being trivia.
The shortest gap on record
Core updates have historically been spaced months apart. The average across recent intervals is 82 days. Seven days is so far outside that range that it changes how the period should be read: there was no stable window between the two rollouts in which a site could be measured, so November and December 2024 function as a single reassessment for most diagnostic purposes.
Google offered no explanation for the timing and has not repeated it since.
Why a six-day rollout is not a small update
Rollout length and impact are unrelated, and this update is a useful demonstration. Six days produced sharp movement for affected sites, while the 27-day August 2025 spam update produced comparatively modest visible change. Length reflects how Google chooses to deploy, not how much it moves.
The practical consequence of a short rollout is that there is less time to record a baseline. By the time most owners noticed movement, the update had completed.
What to do with a drop dated 12 to 18 December 2024
- Do not treat it separately from November. Unless your data shows two clear steps, diagnose the whole period from 11 November together.
- Be careful with seasonal noise. Mid-December traffic patterns shift for most commercial sectors regardless of algorithms. Compare against the same period in the previous year as well as against the preceding month.
- Watch for the spam update the next day. The December 2024 spam update launched on 19 December, one day after this one closed. Three confirmed updates in five weeks.
