The December 2025 core update ran from 11 to 29 December 2025, taking 18 days. Google stated at release that the rollout might take up to three weeks, and it finished just inside that. It was the only core update of the second half of 2025, arriving 147 days after June, the longest gap in the recent record.
The end of a 147-day wait
The June 2025 core update completed on 17 July. Nothing core ran again until 11 December. For sites demoted in June, this was the first and only reassessment opportunity in almost five months.
That wait is the important context for this update. Its results were not really about December: they were the verdict on whatever had been done since July, delivered all at once, in the middle of the retail peak.
What Google published
Two entries on the Search Status Dashboard and nothing else. On 11 December, that the December 2025 core update had been released and might take up to three weeks. On 29 December, that the rollout was complete. No blog post, no stated focus, no new policies.
That is now the norm for core updates. Google confirmed four updates in the whole of 2025, against eleven in 2021, while measured volatility stayed high throughout both years.
Diagnosing a drop in this window
- Separate it from Christmas. An 18-day rollout across the peak means seasonal demand and ranking change overlap. Compare year on year, and watch average position rather than clicks.
- Do not measure before 29 December. Rankings moved in both directions throughout, and mid-rollout readings from this period were particularly unreliable.
- Check the September reporting artefact first. Google removed the 100-results parameter in mid-September 2025, causing widespread Search Console impression drops that were not ranking losses. If your decline actually started then, this update is not your cause.
The drop analyzer distinguishes a clicks-only loss from a genuine ranking loss, which is the distinction that settles most cases from late 2025.
Waited from June to December and nothing changed?
Two reassessments have now passed on the same site. That points at the diagnosis rather than the effort. Send your Search Console access and I will tell you what was missed.
