The March 2022 product reviews update ran from 23 March to 11 April 2022, taking 19 days. It was the third in the series and the one that made the pattern unmistakable: Google was going to keep running this system until review content changed, and sites waiting for it to blow over were making a decision without realising it.
Three updates in twelve months
| Update | Dates | Measurement (gap before) |
|---|---|---|
| April 2021 product reviews | 8 to 22 Apr 2021 | First in the series |
| December 2021 product reviews | 1 to 21 Dec 2021 | 223 days |
| March 2022 product reviews | 23 Mar to 11 Apr 2022 | 92 days |
The gaps were shortening. By this point a review site had been reassessed three times in a year against a standard it either met or did not, and the sites that had made no change had been demoted three times for the same reason.
Why repeated demotion is its own signal
This is the most useful thing to take from the March 2022 update, and it applies far beyond review sites. When the same system demotes a site repeatedly across separate releases, the cause is not bad luck and it has not changed. Each release is an independent assessment reaching the same conclusion.
I see the same logic misread constantly in audits. An owner describes being hit by four updates as evidence that Google is unpredictable. It is the opposite: four consistent verdicts on an unchanged site is the most predictable outcome available.
What to do if this describes your site
- Stop waiting. The system now runs continuously and will keep reaching the same verdict until the content changes.
- Pick a small number of products and do them properly. Genuine testing on twenty products, with evidence, beats summaries of two hundred.
- Cut what cannot be tested. A catalogue you cannot support with first-hand experience is the liability, not the asset.

Repeated demotion means the cause survived every attempt to fix it. Send your Search Console access and I will tell you what was actually being judged.
