The September 2022 core update ran from 12 to 26 September 2022, taking 14 days. It was the first core update to run after the helpful content system existed, which makes it the point where site-level quality signals and core ranking signals were operating together for the first time. It also overlapped with the September product reviews update for six days.
The first core update of the helpful content era
The August 2022 helpful content update completed on 9 September. This core update began three days later. For the first time, a site could be carrying a site-level classifier signal and then be reassessed by the core systems on top of it.
Google has been clear that these were separate systems at the time, with the helpful content classifier running continuously and core updates running periodically. In practice, for a site with a large thin archive, the combination produced a steeper decline than either alone.

An affiliate or review site could plausibly have been touched by all three. The order to fix them in is composition first, because the site-level signal caps what page-level work can achieve.
Diagnosing this window
- Start from the four weeks ending 24 August 2022. That is the last uncontaminated baseline before the sequence.
- Look for two or three steps, not one. Compounding declines from this period usually show distinct break points about two weeks apart.
- Search Console will not hold this data. Sixteen months of retention means 2022 is long gone unless you exported it.
