The June 2026 spam update ran from June 24 to June 26, 2026, completing in 2 days and 1 hour. It was the second spam update of the year and it followed a significant policy change: on May 15, 2026 Google revised its spam policies so that spam explicitly includes attempts to manipulate generative AI responses in Search, including AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google did not confirm whether this update enforced that clause, but the sequence is worth noting.

What Google said

The dashboard entry was the standard two sentences: the update applied globally and to all languages, and the rollout might take a few days. No blog post, no new policy categories, no named targets. As with every spam update, the published spam policies remain the standard.

The policy change that preceded it

On May 15, 2026, roughly five weeks before this rollout, Google rewrote the opening of its spam policies. Spam now covers manipulating generative AI features, not just organic rankings. That widened the definition to include tactics aimed at getting cited or favourably represented in AI Overviews and AI Mode rather than at ranking in the ten blue links.

For site owners the practical implication is that generative engine optimisation tactics are now inside the spam policy perimeter. Techniques designed to game an AI answer carry the same enforcement risk as techniques designed to game a ranking.

What to do

  • Audit against the published spam policies rather than guessing. Why: Spam updates enforce specific named policies. Reading them and checking your site honestly against each one takes an afternoon and eliminates most speculation.
  • Do not disavow reflexively. Why: Spam updates are not link updates. Disavowing in response to a spam update is a common and slow-to-reverse mistake.
  • Check your AI-facing tactics if you use them. Why: Since May 2026 these fall under the spam policies. Content built to be cited by AI is fine. Content built to manipulate what AI says is not.
  • Give it two weeks before large changes. Why: Rankings settle after a rollout, and acting during that window destroys your ability to measure what worked. The first 48 hours checklist covers the sequence.

If the cause turns out to be a policy violation, removing it is the whole fix. Spam systems reassess continuously, so recovery does not have to wait for a core update. The spam update recovery service explains the cleanup process, and how long recovery takes sets expectations on timing.
