The November 2024 core update ran from 11 November to 5 December 2024, taking 24 days. It is notable less for what it targeted than for what followed it: the December 2024 core update began just seven days after this one completed, the shortest gap between two core updates on record. Anyone diagnosing a drop from this period has to separate two reassessments that happened almost back to back.
Why the date matters more than usual here
A 24-day rollout produces movement in both directions throughout, and rankings that fell on day four often partly returned by day twenty. Measuring anything before 5 December gave an unreliable reading, and many site owners drew conclusions from the middle of the rollout and acted on them.
Then the December update started on 12 December, before most sites had a clean 28-day measurement window after November closed. In practice the two rollouts have to be treated as one period for diagnosis, because there was never a stable baseline between them.
The three core updates in one quarter
| Update | Dates | Measurement (rollout) | Gap before it |
|---|---|---|---|
| August 2024 core | 15 Aug to 3 Sep 2024 | 19 days | — |
| November 2024 core | 11 Nov to 5 Dec 2024 | 24 days | 69 days |
| December 2024 core | 12 to 18 Dec 2024 | 6 days | 7 days |
Three core updates inside four months, with the last two almost touching. That clustering is the reason drops from late 2024 are among the hardest to attribute accurately.
How to diagnose a drop from this window
- Use 11 November as the earliest boundary and 18 December as the latest. Treat anything inside as one event unless your own data shows two distinct steps.
- Compare a clean pre-period. The 28 days before 11 November is the only uncontaminated baseline available.
- Check scope by template. Site-wide points at quality reassessment; one section points at something narrower.
The drop analyzer will find whether there were one or two break points in your own data, which is the fastest way to settle it.
