The February 2026 Discover core update ran from February 5 to February 27, 2026, taking 22 days. It was the first core update Google has ever explicitly labelled as Discover-only, meaning it changed how content is recommended in the Discover feed without touching traditional web search rankings. If your Discover traffic fell in February and your search traffic held, this update is the cause and the fix is Discover-specific.

Why this update was different

Until February 2026, Discover visibility moved as a side effect of broad core updates. This was the first time Google adjusted the systems that decide what gets recommended in the feed independently of search ranking. That separation confirms Discover now runs under its own evaluation, which has a practical consequence: you can lose Discover traffic while your rankings are entirely healthy, and no amount of traditional SEO work will bring it back.

What Google said it was targeting

Google published three stated goals for this update, which is more detail than core updates usually receive.

  • Surface more locally relevant content. Why: Discover is a personalised feed, and geographic relevance was weighted up as a recommendation signal.
  • Reduce clickbait. Why: Sensational headlines that overpromise relative to the content were the clearest losers in post-update analysis.
  • Prioritise original and in-depth reporting over rehashed material. Why: Shallow aggregation of trending topics, a common Discover tactic, lost ground to original reporting.

What the data showed

The most striking measurable outcome was a narrowing of the pool. The number of unique domains appearing in United States Discover feeds fell from 172 to 158, which suggests Google tightened the set of sites it considers authoritative enough to recommend. Several large general publishers saw measurable visibility declines while specialist and Google-owned properties gained.

At launch the update applied to English-language content in the United States only. Google confirmed plans to expand it to other languages and regions later in 2026, so publishers in other markets should expect a comparable change rather than treating this as a US-only event.

What to do

  • Audit your headlines for overpromise. Why: Clickbait reduction was a stated goal. Headlines that a reader would call misleading after reading the article are the clearest risk.
  • Replace aggregation with original reporting. Why: Rehashing a trending story lost ground to first-hand material. This is an editorial change, not an SEO change.
  • Strengthen author and publisher credibility signals. Why: A narrower domain pool means the bar for being considered recommendable rose. The YMYL recovery guide covers the signals that matter.
  • Treat Discover as a separate channel with its own metrics. Why: Reporting Discover and search together hides which system moved and leads to fixes aimed at the wrong one.
