August 2025 spam update

Rollout length27 days
Impact levelMedium

The August 2025 spam update ran from 26 August to 22 September 2025, taking 27 days. It is the longest spam update on record and it produced comparatively modest visible movement, which makes it the clearest available evidence that rollout length tells you nothing about impact.

Four weeks of rollout, limited visible effect

Google said at release that the update applied globally and to all languages and that the rollout might take a few weeks. It took nearly four. Volatility trackers recorded elevated but not extreme readings across the period, and industry reporting described the effect as smaller than the length suggested.

Compare that with the March 2026 spam update, which completed in 19 hours 30 minutes and moved rankings sharply for the sites it touched. Length reflects how Google chooses to deploy, not how much it changes.

The mistake this update caused

Many sites demoted by the June 2025 core update watched this rollout hoping to recover in it. They could not have. Spam updates retrain SpamBrain against the published spam policies; they do not reassess core quality judgements.

A core demotion is only re-scored during a core update, and the next one did not begin until 11 December 2025. Four weeks of watching a spam rollout was four weeks of watching the wrong thing, and it is one of the most common wasted efforts I see from that period.

Who it was actually relevant to

  • Sites breaching a published spam policy: scaled content, site reputation abuse, expired domains, cloaking, hacked or scraped content.
  • Nobody else. If your site engages none of those, a drop in this window belongs elsewhere, most likely to the September reporting change or to competitors.
  • Recovery here is continuous. Remove the violation and reassessment follows recrawling, typically two to eight weeks, with no scheduled update to wait for.

Many sites saw impressions collapse during this rollout for an unrelated reason: Google stopped supporting the 100 results parameter around 12 September 2025. See why Search Console impressions dropped in September 2025.
