The January 2020 core update ran from 13 to 16 January 2020, taking 3 days. It is the shortest core update rollout on record, and it is also the oldest update on this tracker. If you are diagnosing a decline that began here, the practical problem is not identifying the update but proving anything about it, because the data no longer exists.
The shortest core rollout ever run
| Rollout | Days | Measurement (context) |
|---|---|---|
| January 2020 core update | 3 | Shortest core rollout recorded |
| December 2024 core update | 6 | Shortest of the modern era |
| March 2024 core update | 45 | Longest core rollout recorded |
| Page experience update | 79 | Longest rollout of any type |
Three days against forty-five. Rollout length tells you about deployment strategy and nothing about impact, which this range makes obvious. The January 2020 update produced substantial reported movement, particularly in YMYL sectors, despite finishing inside a working week.
Why a 2020 diagnosis is a different exercise
Search Console retains sixteen months of performance data. January 2020 fell out of range in mid-2021. Unless you exported and kept it, the original baseline is permanently gone.
- You cannot establish the original loss. Recovery has to be measured against a more recent and lower baseline, and everyone involved needs to accept that upfront.
- Dozens of core updates have run since. Each one reassessed the site. A site still down from 2020 has been judged the same way twenty or more times.
- The cause has probably changed. A site demoted in 2020 for thin content has since been judged by the helpful content system, three new spam policies and AI Overview displacement. The original reason may no longer be the current one.
What to do instead of archaeology
Diagnose the site as it stands today rather than trying to reconstruct 2020. What matters is why it is not ranking now, which is a question current data can answer. Start with the 60 point audit and treat the 2020 date as history rather than as the diagnosis.
Down since 2020 and the data is long gone?
Reconstructing the original loss is usually impossible, but diagnosing why the site does not rank today is not. Send your Search Console access and I will work from what exists.
