The May 2020 core update ran from 4 to 18 May 2020, taking 14 days. It landed during the first pandemic lockdowns, when search behaviour across most sectors had already shifted dramatically for reasons that had nothing to do with Google. Separating algorithmic damage from pandemic demand collapse in this window is genuinely difficult, and most attempts got it wrong.
The hardest attribution window in the tracker
Travel, hospitality, events, local services and retail all saw demand changes of a scale no algorithm has ever produced. Some sectors collapsed, others surged. A travel site that lost 80 percent of its traffic in May 2020 almost certainly lost it to closed borders rather than to a core update.
At the same time the update was real and did move rankings. Both things happened at once, which is why a traffic graph from this period tells you very little on its own.
How to separate the two
- Check impressions and position, not clicks. A demand collapse leaves average position stable while impressions and clicks fall together. A demotion moves position.
- Compare against competitors in the same sector. If everyone fell, it was demand. If you fell and they held, it was ranking.
- Check whether traffic returned with the sector. Demand-driven losses recovered as restrictions lifted. A demotion did not.
- Look at query mix. Pandemic shifts changed which queries existed at all, which is different from losing position on the queries you had.
That first test is the most useful and the most often skipped. Position is the ranking signal; clicks are the demand signal, and the drop analyzer reports both.
If you are still diagnosing a 2020 decline
The data has aged out of Search Console, and the sector context has changed twice since. Rather than reconstructing what happened in May 2020, establish why the site does not rank against current competitors today. That is answerable and the 2020 question mostly is not.
Traffic never recovered after 2020?
Pandemic demand and algorithmic demotion look identical in a traffic graph and need completely different answers. Send your Search Console access and I will tell you which one you had.
