The March 2024 spam update ran from 5 to 20 March 2024, taking 15 days, and overlapped almost entirely with the 45-day March 2024 core update. That overlap is the reason so many drops from this period were misdiagnosed. The spam update also introduced three new spam policies, and those policies are still the enforcement standard being applied today.

Three new policies, still in force

  • Scaled content abuse. Producing many pages primarily to rank rather than to help, whether written by people, by AI, or by both. This remains the most common finding in audits two years later.
  • Site reputation abuse. Third-party content published on an established domain to borrow its ranking signals. Enforcement began on 5 May 2024, giving publishers two months to unwind arrangements.
  • Expired domain abuse. Buying an aged domain to repurpose its authority for unrelated content. Enforced immediately.

Google stated at the time that the combined March 2024 work was intended to reduce low-quality, unoriginal content in search results by around 40 percent. That figure describes the intended cut to results, not to any individual site.

Spam update or core update? The date does not settle it

Because the two ran together, a drop in March 2024 needs a different test. Scope is the reliable signal rather than timing.

  • Loss concentrated on pages matching a policy — scaled output, hosted third-party sections, an acquired domain — points at the spam update.
  • Broad loss across templates that break no policy points at the core update, where the helpful content system had just been merged in.
  • Traffic to near zero rather than a partial decline almost always means a policy violation rather than a quality reassessment.

The page scope analyzer settles which of those you have from a Search Console comparison export.

Recovery path

Spam systems reassess continuously rather than waiting for a scheduled update, so removing the violation can show results in two to eight weeks. That makes this one of the faster recovery types, provided the violation is genuinely removed rather than reduced. A site that halves its scaled output while keeping the same production process is caught again at the next enforcement. The method is in scaled content abuse recovery.
