November 2023 reviews update

The end of a three-year series

Google shipped seven named product reviews updates between April 2021 and this one. Each had a start and end date, so a review site could match a drop to a rollout and know what had happened. After 7 December 2023 that stopped.

The system did not stop. Only the announcements did. A review or affiliate site can be demoted by it today, and the owner will find nothing on the Search Status Dashboard, nothing on any tracker, and no confirmation anywhere that an update ran.

What this means if you run a review site

• Date matching will fail for you more often than for anyone else. Your most likely cause is a system that is never announced.
• A quiet update list is not evidence of safety. The reviews system runs continuously and can move your rankings in any week of the year.
• Recovery does not wait for a core update. Because the system runs continuously, genuine improvement to review content can be reassessed within weeks rather than months. That is a real advantage over a core demotion.

What the system has always rewarded

The standard set across all seven updates never really changed: evidence that the reviewer used the product. Photographs you took, measurements you made, comparisons against alternatives you actually handled, and a clear statement of who tested it and how. Aggregating manufacturer specifications has never satisfied it.

The experience component added to E-E-A-T in December 2022 formalised the same idea across all content types. Score your review pages against it with the E-E-A-T rubric, and treat the experience section as the one that matters most.
