The Google algorithm is not one formula. It is a set of ranking systems that score every page on relevance, quality, usability and context, then combine those scores to order search results. Google changes these systems thousands of times a year and only confirms the largest changes, which it labels core updates, spam updates, or product updates. When your traffic drops after one of those updates, a specific system decided your pages no longer deserve their position. Recovery means finding which system, and why.

Notice two things. First, the number of confirmed updates per year has fallen, from eleven in 2021 to four in 2025, while ranking volatility has not. Google now ships most changes silently. Second, bars overlap. Spam and core updates often run in the same weeks, which is why diagnosis needs dates, not guesses. What the Google algorithm actually is
Google has confirmed that search ranking is handled by many separate systems, each responsible for one part of the decision. A page is fetched by the crawler, stored in the index, and then, at query time, dozens of systems score it against the query and against every competing page. The final order is the combined output. No single system is the algorithm.
That matters for recovery because a drop is almost never global. One system changed its opinion of your site. If you treat every drop as a generic quality problem, you will spend months fixing things that were never broken. Google publishes a guide to its ranking systems. The list below is grouped by what each system judges. The Measurement column tells you where you would see that system acting on your site.

When Google confirms an update, it names the family, not the exact change. A core update means the core ranking systems moved. A spam update means SpamBrain was retrained. A reviews or Discover update names the system directly. That name is your first diagnostic clue, and the update tracker records it for every confirmed rollout.
The four kinds of Google algorithm update
Google groups its confirmed updates into four kinds. Each behaves differently in your data and each needs a different response.
- Core updates. Broad reassessment of relevance and quality, three or four times a year, two to three weeks each. Why: Drops are site-wide and lift only when a later core update re-evaluates the site. The core update recovery service is built around that cycle.
- Spam updates. SpamBrain retrained against policy violations, one to three times a year. Why: Drops are targeted at the violating pages or the whole site if the violation is structural. Recovery can be fast once the violation is removed, see the spam update recovery guide.
- Product and system updates. Reviews, page experience, passage ranking, local, Discover. Why: Drops are limited to the page type the system judges. A reviews update will not touch your service pages.
- Helpful content updates. Ran standalone from August 2022 to September 2023, then merged into core in March 2024. Why: The classifier still exists inside core. How to tell which update hit you
Three checks, in this order, separate an algorithm drop from everything else.
- Match the date. Open Search Console, set 16 months, find the day clicks fell, and compare it with the update chart above. Why: If the drop starts inside a confirmed rollout window, you have a candidate. If nothing matches, read the section on drops with no update.
- Match the scope. Group pages by template: blog, product, category, location, service. Why: A core update usually moves the whole site. A reviews or spam update moves one group. The scope tells you the system.

Why sites drop in Google algorithm updates
Across 300 recoveries the same causes repeat. They are listed by how often they turn out to be the real problem, not by how often owners suspect them.
- Thin or near-duplicate pages at scale. Why: City variants, tag archives, and auto-generated pages that share most of their text drag the site score down. Consolidation is the most common fix, see content pruning strategy.

- Content that answers the keyword but not the searcher. Why: Pages built to a word count, not to a question. Google measures whether the reader was satisfied and it can tell.

Drops with no confirmed update
Since 2024 more ranking changes ship without a name than with one. If your drop does not match a bar on the chart, it is still real. Check the volatility sensor for the date, then work through the same scope and template checks. Unconfirmed adjustments are usually narrower than core updates and are often refined within days, so the first rule is to change nothing for two weeks while you diagnose.
